Absa Bank Kenya has announced that its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Abdi Mohamed, will step down from his role, ending a leadership journey that lasted just over three years.
According to the bank, Mohamed’s resignation will take effect on June 30, 2026. He is leaving the lender to pursue new career opportunities after serving in one of Kenya’s leading financial institutions.
Mohamed took over as CEO in May 2023, bringing with him decades of experience in the banking industry. Before leading Absa Bank Kenya, he held several senior leadership positions within the Absa Group, including Managing Director of Absa Bank Tanzania and regional executive roles across Africa.
During his time at the helm, he oversaw the bank’s strategic growth initiatives and continued efforts to strengthen customer experience and digital banking services.
To ensure a smooth transition, the Board has appointed Chief Financial Officer Yusuf Omari as the Interim Managing Director and CEO beginning July 1, 2026, subject to the necessary regulatory approvals. The bank has also started the process of recruiting a substantive CEO.
Absa Bank thanked Mohamed for his contribution to the institution and wished him success in his future endeavors. The lender also expressed confidence that the leadership transition will support business continuity while the search for a permanent CEO continues.
However the leadership change is not expected to affect the bank’s day-to-day operations. Customers will continue accessing banking services as usual while the transition takes place under the interim leadership.
