WHO Sounds Global Alarm as Ebola spreads Across DR Congo and Uganda.

The World Health Organization has officially declared the ongoing Ebola Virus disease outbreak in Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) after a rapid rise in infections and deaths linked to the rare bundibugyo strain.

Over 300 suspected Ebola Cases Reported

The Health authorities say the outbreak began in Eastern DR Congo’s Ituri Province before crossing to Uganda. The Officials have reported over 300 suspected ebola cases and atleast 80 death cases. The virus has already reached in major uburn centers including Bunia, Goma, and Uganda’s capital city Kampala. This has increased concerns over regional transmission through trade routes and population movement.

Rare Bundibugyo Ebola Starain rises Concern

Unlike the previous Ebola outbreaks dominated by Zaire strain, the current epidemic involves the rare bundibugyo variant – a strain with no approved vaccine or targeted treatment currently available.

Medical experts have warned that the lack of vaccine can worsen containment efforts as healthcare teams race to isolate cases and trace contacts across borders.

Uganda Confirms Imported Ebola Cases.

Uganda’s Ministry of Health confirmed that infected travelers arriving from DR Congo carried the virus into the country. At least one patient reportedly died in intensive care after developing hemorrhagic symptoms associated with advanced Ebola infection.

Authorities in Uganda have activated emergency response systems, increased border screening, and expanded isolation facilities in high-risk areas.

WHO Urges Countries Not to Close Borders

Despite the emergency declaration, WHO advised countries against shutting borders or imposing travel bans, warning that such measures could drive unofficial crossings and worsen the outbreak response.

Instead, the agency is calling for:
Rapid case detection
Cross-border coordination
Contact tracing
Emergency medical support
Public awareness campaigns

Reasons Why This Ebola Outbreak Matters

Experts say the outbreak poses a major regional threat because: It involves a rare Ebola strain, Cases are spreading across borders, Conflict zones complicate response efforts and there is no approved vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain.

The outbreak marks one of the most serious Ebola emergencies in Central Africa in recent years.
