Talanta Stadium is indeed getting a new name! President William Ruto has approved renaming it to Raila Odinga International Stadium in honor of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. This decision follows a public appeal by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja during the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations.
The stadium, currently under construction, is expected to be completed by March 2026 and will have a seating capacity of 60,000. It’s one of the flagship sporting facilities in Nairobi and will host major national and international events, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations .
This renaming is seen as a tribute to Raila Odinga’s contributions to Kenya’s democratic and social progress.
– Formal renaming process underway
– Includes ministry reviews, Cabinet approval, public participation, and gazette notice
– Ceremonial unveiling planned during stadium inauguration
