A massive fire broke out at Gikomba Market in Nairobi in the early hours of Sunday, June 21, 2026. According to Kenya Red Cross, the inferno started at around 4:00 am in the fish section near Gorofani. Flames spread quickly through several stalls, destroying goods worth millions of shillings before county firefighters and local volunteers managed to contain it.
The Kenya Red Cross confirmed they deployed emergency response teams to the scene as part of a multi-agency effort. By 5:30 am they were on the ground supporting response efforts and assessing the needs of affected traders. No casualties have been reported so far, but the extent of the losses is still being established as assessments continue.
This is not the first fire to hit Gikomba. The market has a long history of blazes due to its congested layout and fire hazards. Recent incidents include fires in April 2025 at Kwa Mbao section, March 2025, and May 2025 in the footwear section near Lamu Road. Traders suspect causes range from faulty electrical wiring to deliberate arson, though authorities urge caution until investigations are complete.
Former Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo has called for justice, compensation, and long-term fire safety reforms for Gikomba traders. She said no family should have to rebuild their livelihood repeatedly while safety concerns remain unresolved. Traders are now urging the government to move beyond promises and invest in modern infrastructure to protect one of Kenya’s largest open-air markets.
